Workplace Wellbeing – a ‘nice-to-have’ OR a business necessity?

Published November 17, 2025

Well, it’s official – workplace wellbeing is NO LONGER a ‘nice-to-have’, it’s a business-critical must-have.

According to Personnel Today’s newly released UK Workplace Wellbeing Report 2025, the wellbeing of our people has become one of the most powerful drivers of productivity, loyalty and retention in today’s post-pandemic world.

The report surveyed over 4,000 UK employees and 500 HR managers, uncovering what many of us in the service and people-development space have known for years – when you look after your people, they’ll look after your business.

The Rise of the Wellbeing-Conscious Workforce

The pandemic didn’t just change how we work – it changed why we work.

A staggering 58% of employees now prioritise their wellbeing more than they did just 6 months ago, and nearly half (44%) are more focused on wellbeing than before the pandemic. Younger generations lead this shift, with two-thirds of 16-34 year-olds placing wellbeing at the TOP of their agenda.

Interestingly, the report found that women, particularly in older age brackets, are prioritising their wellbeing less – a reminder to employers that one-size-fits-all wellbeing programmes simply don’t cut it anymore.

At FIT, we’ve always championed a whole-person approach to performance. When frontline teams feel mentally strong, physically healthy and emotionally supported, they deliver standout service that customers remember.

Who’s Responsible for Wellbeing?

  • 41% of employees said their partner or spouse plays the biggest role in their wellbeing
  • 27% said their doctor or healthcare provider
  • And 26% said their employer

That final figure should make every HR leader and business owner sit up straight. Over a quarter of the UK workforce now believe their employer is responsible for their wellbeing.

This is a seismic shift. It means the employer’s role has evolved from Provider of Pay to Partner in Personal Wellbeing.

So, Pay Is No Longer King

While salary still matters, it’s no longer the ultimate motivator. Almost half (48%) of employees now value work–life balance more than pay, signalling that flexibility, autonomy and emotional safety are the new currencies of employee loyalty.

What’s more, 84% of employees said they would stay longer in a job that supports their mental and physical wellbeing. That’s a huge clue for leaders looking to boost retention and reduce churn.

The old equation of ‘pay equals performance’ is being rewritten.

The new one looks more like:

Support + Recognition + Balance = Loyalty + Productivity + Profitability.

The Wellbeing–Performance Link

The report leaves no room for doubt: wellbeing and performance are now intrinsically linked and totally inseparable.

  • 81% of employees said poor wellbeing negatively affects productivity.
  • 44% said it has a significant impact on their ability to perform at work.
  • Only 5% said wellbeing has no effect on their productivity.

Personnel Today sum it up nicely: “Wellbeing is a core driver of performance, shaping an organisation’s ability to be agile and achieve long-term success.”

At FIT, we see this play out daily with the clients we serve. When managers create psychologically safe spaces, when teams feel appreciated and when organisations invest in both emotional and professional growth – performance, customer experience and culture all rise together.

In other words, there is a DIRECT connection and correlation with Employee Experience and Customer Experience, both which DIRECTLY impact an organisation’s bottom line.

The Cost of Ignoring Wellbeing

Ignoring wellbeing is no longer a neutral choice – it’s an expensive mistake.

A company of 100 employees with an average UK salary of £37,430 and a 15% turnover rate will spend £196,515 replacing just 15 people.

Reduce turnover to 10%, and you instantly save £65,505.

That’s the financial proof behind our favourite FIT mantra:

“Happy people make happy customers – and happy customers make healthy profits.”

The New HR Mindset: Think Like a Marketer

One of the most practical insights from the report is the need for HR teams to think more like marketers.

Just as marketers use data to segment their audience and personalise messages, HR professionals can use wellbeing data to understand their people better and tailor support around their needs.

This means creating “personas” – recognising that a parent balancing family life has different pressures from a 25-year-old graduate or a senior leader navigating burnout.

It also means tracking ROI – not just participation numbers, but tangible outcomes like reduced sick days, improved engagement scores and higher retention.

At FIT, we’d add one more step: storytelling. Celebrate those small 1% wellbeing wins, shine a spotlight on role models who embody your culture – and make wellbeing something people talk about with pride, not just policy.

Recognition – The Unsung Hero of Wellbeing

Finally, the report reminds us that feeling valued is central to wellbeing. Recognition doesn’t have to be grand or costly – it just has to be genuine and consistent.

Whether it’s a simple “thank you,” a handwritten note, or a shared celebration of success, recognition feeds emotional wellbeing and strengthens team loyalty.

It’s the ultimate Purple Cow WOW in any wellbeing strategy – small gesture, big impact.

In Summary

The UK Workplace Wellbeing Report 2025 shows a clear link between how people feel and how they perform – a message that should resonate deeply with every leader who believes PEOPLE are their greatest asset.

As Personnel Today concludes:

“The wellbeing of a company’s workforce is no longer a footnote in the annual report; it’s the most valuable asset on the balance sheet.”
